Laboratory Astrophysics: Lessons for Epistemology of Astrophysics
نویسندگان
چکیده
Abstract Astrophysics is often cast as an observational science, devoid of traditional experiments, along with astronomy and cosmology. Yet, a thriving field experimental research exists called laboratory astrophysics. How should we make sense this apparent tension? I argue that approaching the epistemology astrophysics by attending to production empirical data aims better illuminates both successes challenges in than evaluating according presence or absence experiments.

متن کاملNuclear astrophysics lessons from INTEGRAL.
Measurements of high-energy photons from cosmic sources of nuclear radiation through ESA's INTEGRAL mission have advanced our knowledge: new data with high spectral resolution showed that characteristic gamma-ray lines from radioactive decays occur throughout the Galaxy in its interstellar medium. Although the number of detected sources and often the significance of the astrophysical results re...
متن کاملLaboratory Measurements in Nuclear Astrophysics
After reviewing some of the basic concepts, nomenclatures and parametrizations of Astronomy, Astrophysics and Cosmology, we introduce a few central problems in Nuclear Astrophysics, including the hot-CNO cycle, helium burning and solar neutrino’s. We demonstrate that Secondary (Radioactive) Nuclear Beams allow for considerable progress on these problems.
متن کاملProspects of High Energy Laboratory Astrophysics
Ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) have been observed but their sources and production mechanisms are yet to be understood. We envision a laboratory astrophysics program that will contribute to the understanding of cosmic accelerators with efforts to: 1) test and calibrate UHECR observational techniques, and 2) elucidate the underlying physics of cosmic acceleration through laboratory experi...
متن کاملMagnetohydrodynamic scaling: From astrophysics to the laboratory*
During the last few years, considerable progress has been made in simulating astrophysical phenomena in laboratory experiments with high-power lasers. Astrophysical phenomena that have drawn particular interest include supernovae explosions; young supernova remnants; galactic jets; the formation of fine structures in late supernovae remnants by instabilities; and the ablation-driven evolution o...
